Sit Back and Enjoy

There’s always something that needs doing around the Outpost, and today we’re making progress on more than one project! We’re continuing the homemade covers for our solar panels to give them a little extra protection when severe weather, flying debris, snow, and ice come our way. We’ve already made some serious progress, and we’re getting closer to finally calling this project DONE. But when we run short on supplies, it’s time to change gears. We fire up the tractor, grab a few logs, and start getting lumber ready for the next big step on the workshop addition. We need 2x6s for the framework, and instead of heading out to buy lumber, we’re putting what we have right here on the property to work. By the end of the day, we’ve got a good start—and next time, we’ll begin cutting everything and getting those posts up so we can finally start putting a roof over the new workshop addition. Another chapter is coming to a close here at the Outpost! In this video, we're back at the church working to get this project across the finish line. We finally found the metal we needed, got it prepped and installed, took care of some of those important finishing details, and did a little extra work to help everything hold up for years to come. Like most projects around here, it didn't go exactly according to plan—but little by little, it's all coming together, and we're really happy with how it turned out. The heat has been relentless, but the projects still have to get done! In this video, we’re finally wrapping up a project that has taken weeks of work — getting the church marquee cleaned up, rebuilt, and looking better than ever. After pressure washing the old sign, adding new trim, making a few last-minute adjustments, and even trying out something called “concrete in a tube,” it’s finally starting to come together. Back at the homestead, I’m also continuing to work on the panels one at a time. Sometimes a big project doesn’t get finished in one long day — you just keep showing up, doing a little at a time, and eventually you get there. There are still a few finishing touches left, including metal on top of the marquee and solar lighting, but we’re getting close! Thanks so much for coming along with us. The heat has been brutal here in Tennessee, but we’re finally reaching the end of the church project! After weeks of working through 100° temperatures, rain, storms, and everything else that seemed to slow us down, we’ve got the structure finished except for a few final touches. Back at the cabin, there’s no shortage of work waiting on us. Tools need organizing, equipment isn’t cooperating, the property needs attention, the solar panel protectors still need to be finished, and we’ve already got timbers waiting for the next big project. After weeks of cutting, fitting, planning, and preparing every piece, today is finally the day we get to stand this project up and see what all that work has been leading to. Before heading out, there are still a few last-minute pieces to fabricate and a long checklist to go through. We make some brackets from material we already had around the workshop, gather the hardware, tools, timbers, and everything else we'll need — then it's time to start putting it all together. There's something satisfying about seeing a project go from individual pieces scattered around the shop to finally standing where it was designed to be. And we're not quite finished yet. The church marquee project is getting closer and closer to finally coming together, but this part of the build has turned into a story of its own. Today we're finishing the preparation of the black walnut, sanding the remaining pieces, applying timber frame oil, and getting everything ready for assembly. But throughout this project, something interesting keeps happening—just when we think we need to go buy something, what we need seems to already be here. From leftover materials around the property to supplies donated by subscribers, and even an unexpected check that covered exactly what was needed that day, we've been reminded over and over again that the Lord provides. And then there's the walnut itself. This tree began growing here decades ago, long before we ever imagined it would one day become part of a marquee for the church. Now, something that started as a tiny tree could potentially stand for generations. Sometimes a project becomes about much more than what you're building. We’re getting closer and closer to finally putting this project together! Today at the cabin, Dad is finishing up some of the last pieces for the sign structure, cutting and preparing the remaining lumber, and making sure everything is ready when it’s time for assembly. But then it turns into TOOL TIME IN TENNESSEE! I sent Dad a load of tools and gear to help with this project and plenty of projects to come. From new power tools and batteries to fans, lights, hand tools and Packout storage, there were quite a few surprises waiting for him. The best part is knowing these tools won’t just sit around — they’ll be used to build a lot of projects and make a lot of memories here at the cabin. The vision for this project is finally starting to come together! Today we're back at the cabin continuing work on the massive posts for our handcrafted sign project. There's still plenty of careful fitting, chiseling, measuring, gluing, and finishing to do, but we're getting to the point where we can finally see what these pieces are going to look like when everything comes together. We're combining two different styles on this build — the natural character of live-edge wood with traditional timber-frame-inspired construction — and we're really happy with how these posts are turning out. With the joints coming together, the metal details going into place, and both posts nearing completion, we're getting closer to the day when we can finally put this entire project together. The timber frame project is getting to the point where every measurement matters! Today we're working on these massive timbers, making sure everything is centered, square, and lined up exactly where it needs to be before we make things permanent. With pieces this large, being off by even a little can create a much bigger problem later in the build. We're drilling and installing the hardware, cleaning up some tear-out, addressing cracks in the logs, staining and finishing the timbers, and getting everything prepared for the next stage of the project. There are plenty of little challenges along the way—and even a quick trip down to the creek—but we're making progress one piece at a time.
