Sit Back and Enjoy

Black Walnut is quickly becoming one of our favorite woods to work with, and in this video we're milling more logs into lumber for a special project we've been building for our church. Using our sawmill, we cut and sort the material needed for the framework, rafters, trim pieces, and posts as this live-edge and timber-frame design begins to take shape. The more we cut and sand, the more beautiful the walnut grain becomes, and it's exciting to finally see the project coming together. We also finish up a community fence project that was inspired by the Amish volunteers who came to help our area recover after Hurricane Helene. Serving others is always rewarding, and we're thankful to be able to lend a hand where it's needed. There's still plenty of work ahead as we begin cutting mortise-and-tenon joinery and preparing for assembly, but we're getting closer every day. We’re transforming rough Black Walnut logs into a custom timber frame marquee, and the project is finally starting to take shape. In this episode, we continue shaping the massive walnut posts, dealing with checking and cracks, milling roof components, and turning a crooked log into usable lumber for the framework. Black Walnut is one of the most beautiful woods we’ve ever worked with, and as the sanding begins, the grain and character really start to come alive. This marquee will combine timber frame construction with live-edge elements to create something that should last for many years to come. Along the way, we tackle a few unexpected challenges, spend some time around the homestead, check in on Jennifer's garden, and make progress toward bringing this vision to life. Our community restoration project for families affected by Hurricane Helene is nearly complete, and it's been a blessing to lend a hand alongside friends from church and our local community. Back at the homestead, we continue making progress on the workshop addition. Instead of purchasing lumber, we've been milling our own logs into usable building material right here on the property. This week we finish sawing the last of the North Carolina logs, cut additional framing lumber, and continue preparing black walnut timbers for a special marquee project. We also tackle another improvement around the homestead by installing a creek crossing that will make access easier for years to come. Sometimes God works in ways that leave you shaking your head in amazement. What started as a simple truck repair turned into a week filled with blessing after blessing. A truck that had been sitting for months was repaired, the air conditioning came back to life, needed tools were provided, gravel and drainage pipe were donated, and an unbelievable deal on a water storage tank appeared at just the right time. In this video, we share the story behind these unexpected provisions and how one act of faith led to a week we won't soon forget. Whether you're building a homestead, tackling projects on a budget, or simply looking for encouragement, we hope this story reminds you that God is still working in ways we don't always see coming. We are also making progress on improving the homestead with drainage work, future bridge repairs, and plans for a rainwater collection system that will help make the cabin even more self-sufficient. Instead of buying lumber, we’re making our own. This week we’re back at the sawmill turning logs into lumber for a new workshop addition. By using trees from our own property, we’re able to save thousands of dollars while putting our sawmill to work and making progress on our homestead dream. The new addition will give us a covered outdoor workspace for our table saw, chop saw, and other tools that create a lot of dust. Rather than investing in an expensive dust collection system, we’re building a practical solution that will keep the workshop cleaner and provide more room to work. Along the way we tackle a few homestead projects, spend time with family, check on the garden, and continue preparing materials for the next phase of construction. We Rented an Excavator and Drained our Lower Field. We also Started Work on a New Marquee for the Church made from Black Walnut. This should be a fun project and one that will last for a long time. We are going with Live Edge and Timber Frame together to create a long lasting and solid framework that will last probably 25 years plus. Today we’re preparing beautiful black walnut logs for a special project that will serve our church for years to come. Before the build begins, we’re spending time improving the workshop, organizing tools and supplies, and making sure everything is ready for the projects ahead. Good organization saves time, improves efficiency, and helps us focus on the work that matters. We finally received the Clutch Cable for the WoodMizer LX150 and are going to show you step by step how to Repair & Replace the Part. This cable simultaneously increases the throttle on the Mill and engages the Drive Belt tension on the blade. When working properly the Drive Belt should have approximately one/half inch deflection. Engine idle is also affected by a damaged cable resulting in a decrease in power and speed with which you can cut before the blade stops because the cable is more than likely stretched as the fibers break and deteriorate causing the cable to be longer.
