Sit Back and Enjoy

In today’s video, we’re back to work on the black walnut marquee project—and fixing a mistake from the last video. After pouring the concrete a little too wide, we needed to modify the live-edge posts so everything would fit the way it was originally intended. That means carefully cutting and routing a new mortise into the post, making room for the steel support, and taking our time so we don’t ruin a beautiful piece of black walnut. But before we could get too far into the project, things got interesting around the homestead. What I first thought might be a wild hog near the old chicken pen turned out to look a whole lot more like a BEAR! And apparently, it wasn’t the only recent bear sighting around here. Once we got back to work, we finished fitting the post, added stain and timber oil to help protect the walnut for years to come, and made sure the post would be protected from moisture coming up through the concrete. And just when we started making some real progress… here comes the rain AGAIN! The good news is—we got one more post finished, and this marquee is getting closer and closer to completion. Once both posts are finished, we’ll be moving on to the sheathing and fascia boards. Thanks for coming along with us here at the cabin. The black walnut marquee project is moving forward, but this time we ran into a problem I definitely wasn't planning on! After digging our holes 3 feet deep and pouring nearly 500 pounds of concrete into each one, I realized I had made a mistake in my measurements. Thankfully, it doesn't mean tearing everything out and starting over—but it does mean modifying these massive black walnut posts and coming up with a solution that will still look like it was designed that way from the beginning. Back at the Outpost, we're continuing to oil and prepare the beautiful black walnut timbers, working out the mounting system, and even putting one of the homemade jigs from the cabin build back to work. Sometimes a mistake forces you to rethink the plan—and sometimes the solution may actually turn out better than the original idea. We also take a little time with Smoky and Dolly at the creek, check out a freshly cleaned tractor, and receive an unexpected blessing in the mail that reminds us what truly matters. The black walnut marquee project is moving right along, and today we're getting one step closer to putting it all together! We're applying timber oil to the posts and rafters, and the difference it makes in this black walnut is incredible. We're also making a trip into town to track down the 3/4" hardware we'll need before we start digging holes and pouring concrete for the installation. Of course, no project around the Outpost seems complete without a little weather trying to slow us down. With thunder in the distance and another storm rolling in, we're racing against the rain to get as much of the timber finished and under cover as possible. We're excited to see this project finally starting to come together, and we're incredibly thankful for everyone who has followed along, encouraged us, and even helped provide some of the materials along the way. Severe storms are moving in, but there’s still work to get done around the homestead! Before the heavy rain arrives, we’re making sure the driveway drainage is ready to handle the water and protect the bridge from erosion. Then it’s back to work on our black walnut timber-frame marquee. Today we’re staining and protecting the timbers, fine-tuning the fit of the rafters, making a few adjustments, and getting everything dry-fitted before it all comes apart again for timber oil. This project is getting closer and closer to final assembly, but the weather definitely isn’t making things easy. Sometimes you just have to work with the time—and weather—you’re given! Every timber tells a story, but one wrong cut can change everything. In this episode, we're hand-fitting traditional timber frame joinery one careful cut at a time. From laying out center lines to fine-tuning each mortise and tenon, every adjustment brings us one step closer to raising this handcrafted structure. Working with hardwood isn't always easy. Our Black Walnut Timber Frame Marquee is coming along. We are Scribing the Last Black Walnut Post before we assemble and dry fit all the pieces. The Walnut was salvaged from the Power Route that was cleared and saved for a future project, which in this case became the New Church Marquee. Our Black Walnut Timber Frame Marquee will look stunning when complete. Sanding the Roof material has revealed a beautiful grain pattern and color that isn't bought from the Big Box Store. Our Black Walnut Timber Frame Project for the Church is almost ready to assemble. When the Framework for the Roof is complete, and the last Post is carved out and sanded, all the parts can be oiled, transported and assembled. The Black Walnut grain and patterns are very nice. The size of the materials used will also contribute to the longevity of the Project. Having a canopy overhead should also aide in how long the framework will last. Black Walnut is exceptional when sanded down and finished with oil. Our Timber Frame Roof and Live Edge Posts will be very beautiful and will last for many Decades to come. The Trees grow wild here on the homestead and were salvaged from cutting the power route for Jennifers house built last year.
